Fuel-Injected Engines
When starting a fuel-injected engine, the most importan t thing
to rem ember is to avoid pressin g down on the accelerator
before or durin g startin g. Only use the accelerator when you
have problem s getting you r vehicle started . See Starting Your
Engine in this chap ter for details abou t when to use the
accelerator while you start you r vehicle.

RWARN ING
Do not start you r veh icle in a closed garage or oth er
enclosed area. Never sit in a stop ped veh icle for more
than a short period of tim e with the engin e running.

Fumes in this chapter for more instru ction s.
Before you start you r vehicle, do the follow ing:

Make sure all occupants in the vehicle bu ckle their safety
belts. See Safety Restraints in the Ind ex for more details.
Make sure the head lam ps and other accessories are tu rned
off when starting.
If you have an autom atic tran smission , make sure that the
gearshift lever is in P (Park) and the parking brake is set
before you tu rn the key.

If you have a manual tran smission , make sure that the
parking brake is fully set, push the clutch pedal to the floor,
and put the gearshift into Neutral before you tu rn the key.
(Remember, the starter will operate only if the clutch pedal
is pushed in all the way).
