THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING  YOUR VEHICLE

Airbags  inflate  in moderate  to high  speed  impacts.  Along
with  seat belts and  pretensioners,   front airbags  work  with
the  instru ment  panel  knee  bolsters  to provid  e improved
protection  for the  driver  and front  passenger.  Side airbags  2
also work  with  seat belts to  improve  occupant  protection.
WARN ING!
Do not  put anyth  ing on or arou nd  the airb ag covers
or attem pt  to manually   open   them.  You may  dam-
age  the airb ags  and  you  could  be  injured  because
the  airb ags   are  not   there  to   protect   you . These
protective   covers  for  the   airb ag cushion  s  are  de-
sign ed to open  only  when  the airb ags are  inflatin g.
The seat  belts  are designed   to protect  you  in many  typ es
of  collisions.  The  front   airbags   deploy  in  moderate    to
severe  frontal  collisions.  If you r vehicle  is equ ipped,  the
side airbag  on  the crash  side of  the vehicle  is triggered  in
moderate   to  severe   side  collisions.   In  certain   typ es of
collisions,  both  the  front   and  side  airbags  may   be trig-
gered . But even  in collisions  where the  airbags  work,  you
need  the  seat  belts to  keep  you  in the  right  position   for
the  airbags  to protect  you  prop erly.
If you r  veh icle is  equipped   with  sid e  airb ags, do
not   use   accessory   seat   covers   or  place   objects
betw een   you  and   the   sid e  airb ags;  the   perfor-
mance  could  be  adversely   affected   and/or  objects
could  be  pushed   into  you , causin g seriou s  injury.
If you r  veh icle is  equipped   with  sid e  airb ags, do
not  attach  cup  hold ers  or  any oth er  objects  on  or
arou nd  the  door.  The  inflatin  g sid e  airb ag could
drive   the  object   into  occupants,    causin g  seriou s
injury.
Here  are som e simple step s you  can take  to minim ize the
risk  of harm  from  a deploying   airbag.
1.  Child ren  12 years  old and  under   should   alw ays rid e
buckled   up  in  a rear  seat.
