When To Use 4L (Low)  Range
Driving In Snow, Mud and  Sand
Whenoff-roaddriving,shiftinto4L(Low)foradditional
traction and control on slippery or difficult  terrain,
ascendingordescendingsteephills,andtoincreaselow
speed pulling power. This range should be limited to
extreme situations such as deep snow, mud, steep in-
clines,orsandwhereadditionallowspeedpullingpower
isneeded.Vehiclespeedsinexcessof25mph(40km/h)
shouldbeavoidedwhenin4L(Low)range.
Snow
In heavy snow or for additional control and traction at
slowerspeeds,shiftthetransmissionintoalowgearand
thetransfercaseinto4L(Low)ifnecessary.Don’tshiftto
alowergearthannecessarytomaintainheadway.Over-
revvingtheenginecanspinthewheelsandtractionwill
be lost. If you start to slow to a stop, try turning your
steeringwheelnomorethana1/4turnquicklybackand     5
forth, while still applying throttle. This will allow the
tirestogetafreshЉbiteЉandhelpmaintainyourmomen-
tum.
Simultaneous Brake And Throttle Operation
Many off-road driving conditions require the simulta-
neoususeofthebrakeandthrottle(two-footeddriving).
When climbing rocks, logs, or other stepped objects,
usinglightbrakepressurewithlightthrottlewillkeepthe
vehicle from jerking or lurching. This technique is also
used when you need to stop and restart a vehicle on a
steepincline.
CAUTION!
On icy or slippery roads, do not downshift at high
engineRPMorvehiclespeeds,becauseenginebrak-
ingmaycauseskiddingandlossofcontrol.
