Driving on hilly or sloping  terrain
Althoughnaturalobstaclesmaymakeitnecessarytotraveldiagonallyup
ordownahillorsteepincline,youshouldalwaystrytodrivestraightup
orstraightdown.Avoiddrivingcrosswiseorturningonsteep
slopesorhills.Adangerliesinlosingtraction,slippingsidewaysand
possiblyrollingover.Wheneverdrivingonahill,determinebeforehand
therouteyouwilluse.Donotdriveoverthecrestofahillwithout
seeingwhatconditionsareontheotherside.Donotdriveinreverse
overahillwithouttheaidofanobserver.
Whenclimbingasteepslopeorhill,
startinalowergearratherthan
downshiftingtoalowergearfroma
highergearoncetheascenthas
started.Thisreducesstrainonthe
engineandthepossibilityofstalling.
Ifyoudostallout,Donottryto
turnaroundbecauseyoumightroll
over.Itisbettertobackdowntoa
safelocation.
Applyjustenoughpowertothewheelstoclimbthehill.Toomuch
powerwillcausethetirestoslip,spinorlosetraction,resultinginlossof
vehiclecontrol.
Descendahillinthesamegearyou
wouldusetoclimbupthehillto
avoidexcessivebrakeapplication
andbrakeoverheating.Donot
descendinneutral,disengage
overdriveormanuallyshifttoa
lowergear.Whendescendinga
steephill,avoidsuddenhard
brakingasyoucouldlosecontrol.
Whenyoubrakehard,thefront
wheelscan’tturnandiftheyaren’t
turning,youwon’tbeabletosteer.
Thefrontwheelshavetobeturninginordertosteerthevehicle.Rapid
pumpingofthebrakepedalwillhelpyouslowthevehicleandstill
maintainsteeringcontrol.
Ifyourvehiclehasanti-lockbrakes,applythebrakessteadily.Donot
“pump”thebrakes.
