STARTING AND OPERATING
sou nd is  heard . This  is an  ind ication  that  the gas  cap  is    NOTE:   When   the fuel  nozzle  “clicks”  or  shu ts off,  the
prop erly  tightened  . Press  the  odometer    reset  button  to    fuel  tank  is full.
turn  the message  off. If the problem   persists,  the message
will  appear   the   next  time   the  vehicle   is  started .  This
might  ind icate a damaged   cap. If the  problem  is detected
twice  in a  row, the  system  will  turn  on  the  Malfu nction
Ind icator  Light  (MIL). Resolving   the  problem   will  turn
the  MIL light  off.
WARN ING!
Never  have   any  smoking   materials   lit  in  or  near
the  veh icle  when   the  gas  cap  is  rem oved   or the
tan k is  filled .
Never  add fuel  when  the  engin e is running.   This  is
in  violation   of most   state  and  fed eral  fire  regu la-
tion s and  will  cause  the  MIL  to turn   on.
CAUTIO N!
Damage   to  the   fuel   system   or  emission   control
system   could  resu lt  from  usin g an  improp  er  fuel
cap  (gas cap).  A poorly  fittin  g cap could   let impu-
rities  into   the  fuel  system  . Also,  a  poorly   fittin g
afterm ark et  cap  can cause   the  MIL  to illu minate,
due  to fuel   vap ors escap ing  from  the  system .
To avoid  fuel  spillage   and  overfillin  g, do  not “top
off”  the  fuel  tan k after  fillin g.
NOTE:
•  Tightenclick.  Thisthe isgasancapindabouicationt 1/ 4thatturntheuntilcapyouis   hearprop erlyone
tightened  .
If the  gas  cap is  not  tightened   prop erly, the  MIL will
come  on. Be  sure  the gas  cap  is tightened   every  time
the  vehicle  is refu eled .
