The Autom atic Transmission must be in “P” (Park )
position for recreation al tow ing. The Manual
Transmission (if equipped) must be in gear (for
exam ple, 4th gear) for recreation al tow ing. Failu re
to follow these proced ures can cause severe tran s-
mission and/or tran sfer case damage.
You or oth ers could be injured if you leave the
veh icle unatten ded with the tran sfer case in the
Neutral (N) position with out first fully engagin g the
park ing brak e. The tran sfer case Neutral (N) position
disen gages both the fron t drivesh aft and rear drive-
shaft from the powertrain and it will allow the
veh icle to move desp ite the tran smission position .
The park ing brak e should alw ays be applied when
the driver is not in the veh icle.

Intern al damage to the tran smission or tran sfer
case will occur if a fron t or rear wheel lift is used
when recreation al tow ing.

Before recreation al tow ing, perform the proced ure
outlin ed under “Sh iftin g into Neutral” to be cer-
tain that the tran sfer case is fully in Neutral (N).
Otherw ise, intern al damage will resu lt.
Shiftin g into Neutral (N)
Perform the follow ing proced ure to prep are you r vehicle
for recreational tow ing:
•
Do not use a bumper mounted clam p-on tow bar
on you r veh icle. The bumper face bar will be
damaged .

Bring the vehicle to a complete stop .
Shut OFF the engine.
