How fail-safe cooling works
Iftheenginebeginstooverheat:
Theenginecoolanttemperature
gaugewillmovetothered(hot)
area.
The“CheckEngine”indicator
lightwillilluminate.
Iftheenginereachesapreset
over-temperaturecondition,theenginewillautomaticallyswitchto
alternatingcylinderoperation.Eachdisabledcylinderactsasanair
pumpandcoolstheengine.
Whenthisoccursthevehiclewillstilloperate.However:
Theenginepowerwillbelimited.
Theairconditioningsystemwillbedisabled.
Continuedoperationwillincreasetheenginetemperature:
Theenginewillcompletelyshutdown.
Steeringandbrakingeffortwillincrease.
Oncetheenginetemperaturecools,theenginecanbere-started.Take
yourvehicletoanauthorizeddealerassoonaspossibletominimize
enginedamage.
Whenfail-safemodeisactivated
Youhavelimitedenginepowerwheninthefail-safemode,sodrivethe
vehiclewithcaution.Thevehiclewillnotbeabletomaintainhighspeed
operationandtheenginewillrunrough.Rememberthattheengineis
capableofcompletelyshuttingdownautomaticallytopreventengine
damage,therefore:

Pullofftheroadassoonassafelypossibleandturnofftheengine.
Arrangeforthevehicletobetakentoanauthorizeddealer.
Ifthisisnotpossible,waitashortperiodfortheenginetocool.
Checkthecoolantlevelandreplenishiflow.
Neverremovethecoolantreservoircapwhiletheengineis
runningorhot.

Restarttheengineandtakeyourvehicletoanauthorizeddealer.
Drivingthevehiclewithoutrepairingtheengineproblem
increasesthechanceofenginedamage.Takeyourvehicletoan
authorizeddealerassoonaspossible.
