Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,itmayalso
causeminorburns,abrasions,swellingortemporaryhearingloss.
Becauseairbagsmustinflaterapidlyandwithconsiderableforce,there
istheriskofdeathorseriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeye
injuriesorinternalinjuries,particularlytooccupantswhoarenot
properlyrestrainedorareotherwiseoutofpositionatthetimeofairbag
deployment.Thus,itisextremelyimportantthatoccupantsbeproperly
restrainedasfarawayfromtheairbagmoduleaspossiblewhile
maintainingvehiclecontrol.
Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafterinflation.Donot
touchthemafterinflation.
Iftheairbagisdeployed,       the  air  ba g will  not  funct  ion  again
and  mu st  be  repla ced  imme dia tely. Iftheairbagisnot
replaced,theunrepairedareawillincreasetheriskofinjuryina
collision.

oneormoreimpactandsafingsensors,
