DuringnormaloperationtheAWDsystemisinAWDAUTOmode(AWD
LOCKEDwillilluminateinthemessagecenterforfoursecondswhen
youfirststartyourvehicle).The4X4indicatorintheinstrumentcluster
willalsocomeon.
ForinstructionsonselectingtheAWDLOCKEDmode,refertoMessage
centerintheDriverControlschapter.Thismodeisnotintendedforuse
ondrypavement.Thismodeisappropriateforseverewinteroroff-road
conditionssuchasdeepsnow,iceorshallowsand.TheuseofAWD
LOCKEDondryorhardsurfacesmayproducesomenoise,suchas
occasionalclunks,butwillnotdamagethedrivesystem.
Autolock operation (4.6L engine vehicles only)
IftheAWDsystembeginstooverheat,thesystemwillplaceitselfinthe
Autolockmode:
•
AWDLOCKEDwillbedisplayedinthemessagecenterforfour
secondsandthe4x4indicatorlightwillilluminateintheinstrument
cluster.Awarningchimewillalsosound.Thisconditionmayclear
withoutanyactionbeingtakenbythedriveroncetheAWDsystem
hasreachedasafeoperatingtemperature.

The4X4indicatorlightintheinstrumentclusterwillturnoffwhen
theAWDsystemreachesasafeoperatingtemperatureandnormal
AWDoperationisrestored.
Driving off-road with truck and utility vehicles
AWDand4WDvehiclesarespeciallyequippedfordrivingonsand,snow,
mudandroughterrainandhaveoperatingcharacteristicsthatare
somewhatdifferentfromconventionalvehicles,bothonandofftheroad.
Howyourvehiclediffersfromothervehicles
Truckandutilityvehiclescandifferfromsomeothervehicles.Your
vehiclemaybehighertoallowittotraveloverroughterrainwithout
gettinghungupordamagingunderbodycomponents.
Thedifferencesthatmakeyourvehiclesoversatilealsomakeithandle
differentlythananordinarypassengercar.
Maintainsteeringwheelcontrolatalltimes,especiallyinroughterrain.
Sincesuddenchangesinterraincanresultinabruptsteeringwheel
motion,makesureyougripthesteeringwheelfromtheoutside.Donot
gripthespokes.
Drivecautiouslytoavoidvehicledamagefromconcealedobjectssuchas
rocksandstumps.
