Thesesystemsoperateindependentlydependingonthetypeofaccidentencountered;if
youhavesideandcurtainairbags,thesideandcurtainairbagsarenotlikelytodeployon
bothsidesinthesameaccidentbecauseavehicleisnotoftenhitfrombothsides.Theside
andcurtainairbagsandthefrontalairbagsystemwillnotnormallydeployduringthe
sametypeofaccidentunlessacombinationoffrontalandsideimpactsoccur.
Theairbagsupplementalrestraintsystemsaredesignedtoprovidesupplementalprotection
onlyinthefrontseatsincertainsituationsandtherearoutsidepassengerpositionsonlyin
same-sidecollisions,soseatbeltsarealwaysimportantinthefollowingways:
Withoutseatbeltusage,theairbagscannotprovideadequateprotectionduringanaccident.
Seatbeltusageisnecessaryto:
Keeptheoccupantfrombeingthrownintoaninflatingairbag.

Reducethepossibilityofinjuriesduringanaccidentthatisnotdesignedforairbag
l
inflation,suchasroll-overorrearimpact.
Reducethepossibilityofinjuriesinfrontalorsidecollisionsthatarenotsevereenough
l
toactivatetheairbags.
Reducethepossibilityofbeingthrownfromyourvehicle.
l
Reducethepossibilityofinjuriestolowerbodyandlegsduringanaccidentbecausethe
l
airbagsprovidenoprotectiontothesepartsofthebody.
Holdthedriverinapositionwhichallowsbettercontrolofthevehicle.
l
Childrenshouldbeprotectedbyachild-restraintsystem.Lawsvaryonthesizeachild
mustbetouseachild-restraintsystem(page2-28).
Carefullyconsiderwhichchild-restraintsystemisnecessaryforyourchildandfollowthe
installationdirectionsinthisOwner'sManualaswellasthechild-restraintsystem
manufacturer'sinstructions.
