Whenchildrenshoulduseboosterseats
Childrenneedtouseboosterseatsfromthetimetheyoutgrowthe
toddlerseatuntiltheyarebigenoughforthevehicleseatand
lap/shoulderbelttofitproperly.Generallythisiswhentheyreacha
heightofatleast4feet9inches(1.45meters)tall(aroundageeightto
agetwelveandbetween40lb(18kg)and80lb(36kg)orupwardto
100
lb(45kg)ifrecommendedbyyourchildrestraintmanufacturer).
Manystateandprovinciallawsrequirethatchildrenuseapproved
boosterseatsuntiltheyreachageeight,aheightof4feet9inches
(1.45
meters)tall,or80lb(36kg).
BoosterseatsshouldbeuseduntilyoucananswerYEStoALLofthese
questionswhenseatedwithoutaboosterseat:
Canthechildsitallthewayback
againstthevehicleseatbackwith
kneesbentcomfortablyatthe
edgeoftheseatcushion?
Canthechildsitwithout
slouching?
Doesthelapbeltrestlowacrossthehips?
Istheshoulderbeltcenteredontheshoulderandchest?
Canthechildstayseatedlikethisforthewholetrip?
Typesofboosterseats
Therearegenerallytwotypesofbelt-positioningboosterseats:backless
andhighback.Alwaysuseboosterseatsinconjunctionwiththevehicle
lap/shoulderbelt.
Backlessboosterseats
Ifyourbacklessboosterseathasa
removableshield,removethe
shield.Ifavehicleseatingposition
hasalowseatbackornohead
restraint,abacklessboosterseat
mayplaceyourchild’shead(as
measuredatthetopsoftheears)
abovethetopoftheseat.Inthis
case,movethebacklessbooster
toanotherseatingpositionwitha
higherseatbackorheadrestraintandlap/shoulderbelts,orconsider
usingahighbackboosterseat.
