Thefrontpassengersensingsystemcanautomaticallyturnoffthe
passengerfrontairbagwhenarearfacingchildseat,aforward-facing
childrestraint,oraboosterseatisdetected.Evenwiththistechnology,
parentsareSTRONGLYencouragedtoalwaysproperlyrestrainchildren
intherearseat.Thesensoralsoturnsofftheairbagwhenthepassenger
seatisemptytopreventunnecessaryreplacementoftheairbag(s)after
acollision.
Whenthefrontpassengerseatisoccupiedandthesensingsystemhas
turnedoffthepassenger’sfrontalairbag,the“passairbagoff”indicator
willlightandstaylittoremindyouthatthefrontpassengerfrontal
airbagisoff.SeeFrontpassengersensingsystemintheAirbag
supplementalrestraintsystem(SRS)sectionofthischapter.
Front seat belt usage sensors
Thefrontseatbeltusagesensorsdetectwhetherornotthedriverand
frontoutboardpassengerseatbeltsarefastened.Thisinformationallows
yourPersonalSafetySystemtotailortheairbagdeploymentandseat
beltpretensioneractivationdependinguponseatbeltusage.
Front outboard seat belt pretensioners
Theseatbeltpretensionersatthefrontoutboardseatingpositionsare
designedtotightentheseatbeltsfirmlyagainsttheoccupant’sbody
duringfrontalcollisions.Thishelpsincreasetheeffectivenessoftheseat
belts.Infrontalcollisions,theseatbeltpretensionerscanbeactivated
aloneor,ifthecollisionisofsufficientseverity,togetherwiththefront
airbags.
Front outboard seat belt energy management retractors
Thefrontseatbeltenergymanagementretractorsallowwebbingtobe
pulledoutoftheretractorinagradualandcontrolledmannerin
responsetotheoccupant’sforwardmomentum.Thishelpsreducethe
riskofforce-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’schestbylimitingtheload

Determining if the Personal Safety Systemா is operational
ThePersonalSafetySystemusesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarninglightsandchimessectionintheInstrumentCluster
chapter.RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystemisnot
required.
