Avoidneedless heavybraking. Somepeopledrivein
spurts,heavyacceleration followed byheavybraking,
ratherthankeepingpacewithtraffic.Thisisamistake.
Thebrakesmightnothavetimetocoolbetweenhard
stops.Thebrakeswillwearoutmuchfasterwithalot
ofheavybraking. Keepingpacewiththetrafficand
allowing realistic following distances eliminates alot
ofunnecessary braking. Thatmeansbetterbraking
andlongerbrakelife.

time.Deciding topushthebrakepedalisperception
time.Actually doingitisreactiontime.
Averagereactiontimeisaboutthree‐fourthsofa
second.Butthatisonlyanaverage.Itmightbeless
withonedriverandaslongastwoorthreesecondsor
morewithanother.Age,physical condition, alertness,
coordination, andeyesight allplayapart.Sodoalcohol,
drugs,andfrustration. Buteveninthree‐fourthsofa
second,avehiclemovingat100km/h(60mph)travels
Iftheengineeverstopswhilethevehicleisbeing
driven,brakenormally butdonotpumpthebrakes.
Ifthebrakesarepumped,thepedalcouldgetharderto
pushdown.Iftheenginestops,therewillstillbesome
powerbrakeassistbutitwillbeusedwhenthebrakeis
applied. Oncethepowerassistisusedup,itcantake
longertostopandthebrakepedalwillbeharder
topush.
