the  transm ission  selector  is in  D (Drive);
During  cold  tem peratu re  operation   you  may  notice  de-
layed   upshifts   depend ing  on   engine  and   transm ission
tem peratu re. This  featu re improves  the  warm  up time  of
the  engine  and  transm ission.
the engine  coolant  has  reached  norm al operating   tem -
peratu re;
vehicle   speed   is  above   approxim ately   30  mph   (48
km/  h);
If the  transm  ission  tem peratu re gets  extrem ely  hot,  the
transm ission  will  autom atically  select the  most  desirable
gear for  operation  at this  tem peratu re. If the transm ission
tem peratu re becom es hot  enou gh, the “TRAN SMISSION
OVER  TEMP”  message  may  display   and  the  transm  is-  5
sion  may downshift   out  of Overd rive  until  the transm is-
sion  cools down.  After  cool  down,  the  transm ission  will
resu me norm al  operation.
the  “TOW/ HAUL”  switch  has  not  been  activated ;
transm ission  has  reached   norm al operating   tem pera-
ture.
NOTE:    If the  vehicle  is started   in  extrem ely cold  tem -
peratu res,  the transm  ission may  not  shift into  Overd rive
and  will autom  atically  select the  most  desirable  gear  for
operation   at   this  tem peratu re.   Norm al  operation   will
resu me  when   the   transm ission  fluid   tem peratu re  has
risen  to  a  suitable   level.  Refer  also  to  the  Note  und er
torqu e converter   clutch,  later  in this  section.
In high  ambient  tem peratu res with sustained   high engine
speed  and  load , an upshift  follow ed shortly  thereafter  by
a  downshift   may   occur.  This   is a  norm al  part   of  the
overheat    protection    strategy    when   operating    in   the
“Tow/ Haul”   mode.
